Creating the composition involves mapping blood sugar readings to musical pitches and then working with these to build a choral texture. The composition is informed by Dr Kathryn King’s work on public awareness and perception of diabetes, where live self-testing and food consumption, along with an ‘accumulating’ soundtrack and vocal texture enact the basic dynamics of the condition.
Thematically, it’s important to me that the work reaches beyond the interpretative confines of ‘chronic disease’, and registers more broadly in terms of the divisions and threats facing human beings today: food abundance and scarcity, warfare and conflict, otherness, etc.
